Abstract
Spontaneous perforation of the intestine in the newborn infant is a rare but catasrtophic condi
tion associated with severe morbidity and high mortality. The causes of neonatal intestinal perfor
ation, on in the cecum and the other in the ileum, are reported. The cases of the perforation is
attributed to the congenital absence of muscle layer in the intestine, of which is proved by histo
logical evidence as well as autopsy.
This represents the first reported cases of neonatal intestinal perforation owing to segmental
absence of intestinal musculature confirmed grossly and histologically. This study attempts to define
further the mature and pathogenesis of neonatal intestinal perforation.
Detailed discussion and literature review in relation to the etiology, clinical findings, and treat
maent are made.
